Every story we tell ourselves shapes our identity, especially those from our childhood. The creation of Just Call Me BiBi is not just a literary project; it’s a journey into the depths of identity, dreams, and personal growth. This tale emerged from a childhood nightmare and evolved into a hopeful narrative for young readers.
From Nightmare to Narrative
As a child, I endured a recurring nightmare that would disrupt my nights. This troubling vision filled my mind with fear and confusion. It wasn’t until I grew older that I began to understand its significance. I was curious. What was this dream trying to tell me about myself?
Partnering with a close friend, I dove into research on dreams. We found out that dreams often mirror our experiences and feelings. For example, studies indicate that nearly 70% of adults experience nightmares at least once a year, and many report a feeling of anxiety or fear tied to those dreams. As I started to make sense of my own fears, memories of my childhood nightmare bubbled back to the surface.
In search of clarity, I began to journal and my entry came out in a rhyming, lyrical poem that demystified this childhood dream. This moment sparked the creation of BeBe and the Sea, a picture book born from the remnants of that haunting experience. Eventually, that picture book evolved into a chapter book, Just Call Me BiBi, ready to connect with other children facing their fears.
Embracing Opportunity
Setting aside the original book opened the door to new possibilities. I shifted my focus from a simple picture book to a more engaging chapter book aimed at children who are starting to read independently.
This transformation allowed me to deepen BiBi’s character and introduce new figures to explore themes of social and emotional development. For instance, I began to weave elements of family legacy into the story. How do we inherit our identities from our ancestors? For many families, studies show that over 60% of children have some awareness of their family histories, impacting how they perceive themselves and their place in society.
I wanted young readers to reflect on their own gifts and imagine what they could create. What world do they envision? Is it one where they feel safe, empowered, and understood?
The Power of Storytelling
The narrative of Just Call Me BiBi transcends basic storytelling. It serves as a mirror for children, helping them explore their identities. Stories are vital for kids; they aid in understanding themselves and those around them. Through BiBi, readers can navigate their dreams, fears, and aspirations.
My goal is to create an environment where children feel they can express their innermost thoughts. If they can relate to BeBe’s journey, it may inspire them to examine their own stories. This exploration can lead to a stronger sense of purpose and identity.
Legacy and Generational Blessings
As the book progresses, it highlights how our identities are shaped by the stories we inherit. Family legacies, whether traditions or experiences, are crucial in forming who we are. By emphasizing these connections, I encourage young readers to recognize the importance of their own family narratives.
We knit our identities from the fabric of past and present experiences. I hope children who read the book will pause to think about their genealogies—seeing them not as a straight line, but as a rich tapestry of influences contributing to their unique selves.
A Call to Co-Create
The journey of crafting Just Call Me BiBi has evolved from confronting childhood fears into an enriching exploration of identity and storytelling. It poses a question for young readers: How will they use their creativity and imagination to shape their worlds?
As they engage with BeBe’s narrative, I hope they find beauty in their journeys, embracing the variety of their identities. Let's encourage each other to share our stories and inspire future generations to co-create a vibrant, safe, and empowering world.

In sharing these stories, may we reflect on our own identities. What dreams are we cherishing? How will we narrate our stories? Seeking these answers can lead to greater self-understanding, empowerment, and inner peace.
